For me, the Imacon's ICC standard Color Management System is the must...
Even with Imacon's supplied profiles...
I'm in a 848...

Vuescan has a similar layer that can be saved by choice with the

not. Using the Nikon (and Minolta, Epson 4870-4990 etc) infrared dust

few
descriptions of FlexTouch makes me wonder whether it is using extra
hardware to actually detect dust and scratches on the film surface or
whether it is working on the scan information only. There's more of
that
available in Polaroid's free Dust and Scratch removal software and a
similar PS feature + plug-ins. They are not like ICE.
It is done purely in software and there is no second infrared pass,
but
there's also no associated slowdown or global loss of sharpness from

I've seen. Neither solution is really an acceptable alternative to
human
retouching for large blemishes, so I don't really see the lack of ICE
being
as big of a dealbreaker as having to wet mount everything is.
For many ICE is a dealbreaker. Not to speak of trays with slides that
went through Nikon 35 mm scanners with ICE on for every unattended
scan. It may take days but every other solution takes weeks.
For 35 mm scanning on the Nikon 8000 that I have I can use wet
mounting but usually I scan them with the normal 35 mm film carrier.
The out of focus issue isn't with that carrier but with the glassless
MF carrier. If it has to be better with dry scanning of 35 mm (better
masking and solving curled film problems) then I put them in full
frame WESS AGX500K slide mounts and use the 35 mm slide carrier. With
moderate ICE on.
The pity is that most comparisons between scanners are made with out
of the box software and hardware. No tricks allowed. No internal
sharpening routines neutralised. The picture gets distorted that way.
