Roger,
We have 3 Artisans in our studio and there are 2 more across the street
in the Museum's studio. I also have several older Barco Ref Vs. We
recently added a couple Eizo's to the mix, as did the Museums. As has
been pointed out, there are advantaged and disadvantages to both CRT
and LCD technology at this point. But, the fact is, CRT is over and LCD
will continue to improve. I would not buy another Artisan at this
point. All 5 I've used suffer from bad to moderate problems with uneven
screen illumination, the dreaded magenta/green blotches. Every CRT I've
ever used has had this problem (We work with lots of light works on
paper, and I'm really picky). There are also convergence problems,
moderate flicker, some distortion, and as far as color goes it has its
own "look". The Barco's are even worse when it comes to even
illumination and color across the screen (despite having a feature to
deal with this issue). And, yes they have there own "look". The Eizo's
that I've used, and I bought a modest (non-ColorEdge) model myself for
use at home, have very (almost perfect) even screen illumination. I
think the shadow detail is fine, and that neutrals are the best I've
seen. The color is very accurate once you get used to the LCD "look".
When we got the first 18 inch Eizo, I put up an image of a painting on
the Artisan, wheeled over the Eizo, plugged it into my powerbook, ran
the calibration, and put up the same image. Were they exactly the same?
No, but very they were very close and if I threw the Barco into the mix
there would have been 3 versions. I find there is a bit of a glassy
look to LCD display, that highlights loose a bit of detail and
separation, that you have to adjust to how much sharper the screen is,
and that yes if you move around it does change a bit. But they are
even, accurate, and easy on the eyes after many years of staring at the
screen.

I don't want to bash ACD but I spent a fair part of the afternoon,
yesterday, calibrating an ACD at a client, and boy, am I glad I have
an Eizo
CG21, in comparison. OK, it's not as wide a screen but it's super even
from
edges to edges. Plain to see on a RGB =255,255,255 background in
Photoshop.
Maybe my client has a defective unit (could be) but at the price ACDs
are
selling for, well, I know where I'd rather put my money. I'll conceded
t's
not an Artisan (I concede the Artisan is notch above)
I feel for some of my clients...
