I have a Sony Multiscan E500, about 4 years old. Went to recalibrate,
with
the Eye1 display, and came upon a problem. My contrast is at 100 (as
per instuctions),
my brightness is at 0. And it looks plenty bright. In order to
calibrate the eye1 is looking
for negative brightness. Now, when I put the brightness to 20 or 30
the screen seems to
zoom in (menu bar disappears) and it gets out of focus. So, this
monitor is finished, right?
I could still use it for non color important work? Has anyone seen
this happen before?
Yes. The Barco Ref Cal V's we had at my last job exhibited this
behavior. It would happen gradually throughout the course of the
day...sometimes shrinking, sometimes expanding. We called it
"breathing"! Our guess (and Barco's) was that the power supplies were
going bad. The repair cost on those was well above $500, which is an
absurd amount of $ to dump into a 5 year old monitor.
Now, without trying to start a lcd vs. crt argument, can anyone give me
some biased (cause you
use it) info. Would a 20" apple lcd be an apt replacement for the 21"
Sony CRT? I use Photoshop
about 8 hours a day and could use the lesser eye strain, as long as I
can rely on it, and it'll be
big enough for all the palettes.
The 20" ACD is quite nice and I don't think you will have any problem
adapting to it. You may find it a bit small though. The aspect ratio is
different (16:9) and might feel smaller than your previous 21" CRT
(which most likely had a 4:3 ratio). You may want to consider the 23"
ACD, or possibly even take a look at the new LaCie 321.
