I don't think he's using Adobe applications, but rather mostly Cocoa
applications.
Correct. :-)
Therefore he has to depend on OS-level color management. I think the
ducks are all in a row in his situation except that the driver
settings aren't set the same way as when HP built the CMYK ICC profile
and that's why it prints too dark. Uli needs to find out what the
proper driver settings are FOR THAT PROFILE.
What kind of "driver settings" do you refer to? The PPD specific
settings that the Print panel offers? (These aren't too many, apart
from paper thickness ...)
And even then it's possible he'll need a custom profile. Laser
printers are notoriously inconsistent without external hardware based
calibration at least a couple times per day.
Well, it isn't that bad ;-). If I switch off ColorSync for printing
("Color Conversion: In Printer"), the output has been relatively
consistent, and it comes close to what I see on the screen.
It's just that I still want it to be a bit closer, and want to be able
to use a custom profile (at least in the longer run); therefore, I want
to get the printer to work with ColorSync. (But to stay on topic, it's
probably better to move this discussion to the other thread.)
