Hi Walt,
Not off base at all. In fact, a very reasonable question. I'll copy the
list so everyone else can understand what I'm shooting for.
The specific example I'm measuring is BainBridge Pure White mat board with
Fuji Crystal Archive Matte paper. But there are other combinations that I
also need to match so don't get hung up on any particular paper or mat type.
As you can see from my color measurements below, the paper is noticeably
blue when next to the more neutral mat (b* axis of -1.9 vs. -0.1). In fact,
I have another mat color that is +2 in the b* axis, resulting in a 4 unit b*
axis shift between the paper color and the mat.
I'm using a fairly common fine art mounting method where there is about a
1/2" or so of visible paper around the edge of the image before you reach
the mat. So if the surrounding area of the paper and the mat are not of a
similar color, then it looks strange, very distracting and kinda cheap
actually -- like I didn't know how to match a mat color. The bluish
surround draws your eye from the image. I want the paper and the mat to
blend together so you just don't notice them. The fact that the paper is
slightly darker is not as much of an issue as the fact that it's bluer. If
the paper were lighter than the mat, I'd want to tone down the L* scale as
well.
Yes, this means that any specular white in the image (which would be using
paper white) will be more blue than the mat and the paper area surrounding
the print. But, in my "artistic" opinion these specular areas are typically
very small compared to the mat and are not large clumps of color.
Therefore, they just look very brilliant, rather than blue.
