the idea that you can treat lightness, chroma, and hue separately is an artifact of the models we use. In practice, everything affects everything else, as youve just demonstrated. If you want to make this work, you'll have to use a darker matte or a lighter paper.
I believe he knows this already. He seems aware that he will not achieve a match. If I understand what he is trying to do, it is to minimize (not eliminate completely) any objectionable color difference between the matte and his paper. I think this is possible as long a perfect match is not the goal. He can certainly bring the colors more in line with each other.
