Maybe Don has a special receipe or found special material for dimming the

that's a good idea conceptually. But everytime I tried here I never found a

throughout the spectrum. The Lee-type of theatrical filters are not enough
quality for this purpose as far as I can see. But maybe I am wrong?
I've never found a diffusion material or neutral density gel that's neutral enough. However I have used aluminum window screen for other purposes to cut back light fairly neutrally. The black woven fabric used to make film/photo lighting scrims is pretty neutral as well, I'm sure you can buy this by the yard. One layer is almost exactly 1/2 stop. Don't know if they're good enough for science, but seem pretty good to my eyes.
