I use a similar testing procedure. I developped custom Lab targets that I
use to test printer profiles with. The targets are created using Adobe
InDesign because of its supports for Lab color mode. The targets are based
on an existing test chart layout so that, when the target is printed, I
don't have to measure patches one by one, I can just feed them into my
ICcolor. I use PrintOpen to make the measurements which after saving to a
file, I import into Excel. In Excel, in columns 1 to 3, I entered all 210
Lab patches values. That becomes my 'target'. In columns 4 to 6, I paste in
the measured Lab values that I got off my ICcolor. It is just then a matter
of calculating DeltaE, patches by patches, between the 'target' and the
'actual'. This testing method works great for me. It's a little work to
setup but it's well worth it, I find.
This being said, the problem is how do I know which Lab values to use on the
testchart, in the first place? I try to do an even sampling of Lab space but
I'd like to stop at the gamut boundary. That would entail having access to
accurate gamut information but I don't. Most Lab patches I use return
DeltaEs < 1. The ones that return values > 3, like 4, 5, 12, 28 or more, are
the out of gamut colors which PrintOpen predicts well.
Ignacio, do you have a link for Dr. Morovic gamut article?
