Why not use Photoshop? Take your dot value readings of a 21-step
greyscale.
Go to Photoshop/ Colour settings / Advanced mode/ Grey working space/
Custom Dot Gain. Here enter these readings. Then go back into the Grey
working space drop down menu and Save Grey. This will allow you to
create a greyscale profile.
Works great for us.
I've made one for our sheetfed coated, sheetfed uncoated and web
printing conditions. I've even had a customer send us his laser
printouts which we were told to match. So I took a few readings off of
the halftones, developed a greyscale profile for his laser printer, then
assigned and converted the images to our printing conditions. Customer
was happy.

Subject: Creating Grayscale Profiles
What solutions are available for creating grayscale profiles these days?
I'm not concerned whether the DTP layout programs support grayscale
profiles (but why not, for god's sake?).
But I would like to output target data to a grayscale output device (say
a BW job on a web press -- or a laser printer) and be able to create a
profile that I can use within Photoshop to create optimized grayscale
images for my intended output.
I own an Eye-One and GMB ProfileMaker Pro 4.1.5, and also Pantone
Profiler Pro.
