I seem to remember that someone a while back on this list was wondering what
kind of color gamut the recently introduced LaCie 321 LCD monitor is capable
of displaying.
I just re-profiled a 321 for a client using the DDC-compliant calibration
software that comes with the display (Blue Eye Pro) coupled with my EyeOne
Display 2 colorimeter. This time I made a copy of the profile, so that I
could compare it to one I am currently using for my Apple Studio Display 17"
LCD via a demo version of basICColor display 3.0.4 in L* mode (which I made
with that very same EyeOne Display 2).
I have posted screenshots of the two gamuts compared to each other using
ColorThink 2.1's 3D Lab Grapher on my personal site at
<http://marcoug.home.mindspring.com>. The semi-transparent gamut is the one
for the LaCie 321 LCD.
Surprisingly, given the claims by LaCie, my Apple LCD can display some
colors in the blue and orange color ranges which the LaCie 321 cannot. But
it's also very clear that the LaCie 321 has a markedly larger reach into the
blue-purples and yellow-greens.
Still, I'm certainly disappointed that, at least using LaCie's Blue Eye Pro
software and the EyeOne Display 2, this LaCie monitor cannot match or exceed
some of the colors which appear on my Apple Studio Display LCD, which is
supposed to be an inferior piece of equipment, comparatively speaking.
I wonder whether one could improve the LaCie 321's performance by using the
basICColor display software instead, or ColorEyes Display (both of which
allow access too DDC controls, same as Blue Eye Pro, according to my
information). Also, using a spectrophotometer instead of a colorimeter could
possibly improve the quality of the profile even further. Has anyone tried?
What is the consensus on this LaCie 321?
