Adobe Illustrator CS2 and Adobe InDesign CS2 let you define Pantone
values using Lab, instead of CMYK, as the alternate color space.
In Illustrator CS2, choose the "Spot Options" dialog from the Swatch
palette menu. Select the "Use Lab values specified by the book
manufacturer" radio button.
For InDesign CS2, go to the Ink Manager and check the "Use Standard
Lab Values for Spots" check box.
Using the Lab values for spots in InDesign and Illustrator allows for
an Lab --> CMYK transform at print time using the CMYK printer
profile selecting in the print dialog. This transform is engaged
when you request that spots be converted to process.
In the print case where "convert spots to process" is not chosen
*and* Lab values are used to define spot color appearance, workflows
that use RIP-based transforms using libraries that match Pantone
names to internal Lab values should not be effected. In this case,
Pantone names are still delivered to the RIP through the PostScript
encoding, however, the alternate color space in the PostScript will
be Lab, not CMYK.
