Re: "The Color Mode controls the rendering or "look", not the encoding
or "color space"." This seems to be true but ONLY if one does not check
the "Use this instead of an embedded profile" box in the Capture Prefs
to "override" the "embedded" profile. In the usual situation, where
this is not checked, changing the Color Mode ALSO changes the
encoding/output profile, from Nikon sRGB to Nikon Adobe RGB, as is
described in the Color Mode settings. Obviously (or not), if the pref
is checked, you don't get what's on the label in the Color Mode
settings (sRGB, AdobeRGB). The renderings do change as you describe.
Lacking in elegance would be a kind way to put it. There are others.
Bob, how does Capture set the output profile under Windows? Is there a
conflict between the name of the output profile actually used and the
labels in the Color Mode settings dialog?
The manual for the new D2X states that there are different settings for
the color space and the rendering, or look, WITH limitations (some
"looks" can't be used with certain profiles.) There is a choice between
two profiles - Nikon AdobeRGB or Nikon sRGB. I haven't looked at a D2X
NEF under Capture yet to see what happens.
