Hi Erik, Rich,
My understanding of the Color Mode vs colour space handling in Capture is
mostly the same as yours Erik; in fact, one of the first times I got into a
discussion of this was sitting with you and Nakayama-san several years ago I
believe.
That is, the Color Mode options are colour looks or, in analog terms, the
Nikon equivalent of film types (sort of like Velvia, Reala, Sensia in Fuji's
lineup - though I'm NOT saying that the Color Modes emulate these specific
film types, I'm just using these film stocks as examples).
But, I'm not sure about your description of the encoding, or colour space
handling, part of Capture's workflow. As I understand it, Nikon digital SLR
cameras and Capture work the same way - all processing is done within
"Camera RGB," or rather the RAW data is run through colour matrices and 3D
look up tables and tone curves that aren't operating within an
output-referred ICC colour space like Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB. Then, as a
final step, a conversion to a colour space - as set in either the camera's
menus if it's a JPEG, or as set in Capture's CM prefs if it's a NEF -
converts the image data from Camera RGB to that chosen RGB or (in Capture
only) CMYK colour space.
If I'm understanding your note correctly, you're indicating that all of
Capture's image processing will occur in the colour space chosen in prefs.
If that's Adobe RGB, for example, then all processing from RAW will occur in
Adobe RGB. In other words, the encoding into Adobe RGB occurs as the pic
opens into Capture is what you're saying (and correct me if I've
misunderstood), then all processing occurs in that colour space thereafter.
I don't know if my description or your description is the right one, and I
don't know how much of a real world difference either method would make in
RGB workflows. But since Capture can save to CMYK as well as RGB, that's
another wrinkle here.
I'll see if I can find out the definitive answer from Nikon....
