Well, I am also a pilot, and during instrument training, we were always
taught to trust the instruments, not our body sensations. But were also
taught how to recognize when the instruments were failing.
One example of this was how to deal with an engine failure at night: the
instructor told us to look for a highway first, and if that was not
available, look for a dark area and glide toward it on instruments. Then he
said, "When you are about 100 feet above ground level, turn on your landing
light. If you don't like what you see, TURN IT OFF!" <G>
