Hi Marq,

I managed a EDOX4 Rip driving one of our CLC's a couple of years back, with quite a bit of success. But it certainly has it's little quirks.

It is ICC aware, to a degree. You can use the Profile Manager to set up predefined colour flows in the RIP, and then access these through the print dialogue in the program you're printing from. One important thing to realise is that EDOX doesn't recognise embedded profiles! Instead you have to specify ONE source profile for incoming RGB and ONE for CMYK data. In the case of RGB data you also have the option to specify a simulation profile. You can also choose rendering intents at each separate stage.

So you can use the colour management in edox IF you are sending data that are harmonised to one working space (actually two, one for CMYK and one for RGB), and that working space is the same as what you specified in Profile Manager.

You can make up to a 100 different queues for different workflows and hope that the users remember when to use which. Oh yeah, you can set one of them as the standard setting, that gets used on all jobs unless otherwise specified at print time. You can also set up hotfolders for different settings, which kinda worked for us.

Another thing to watch out for is that it won't colour manage EPS files. And don't forget to switch the switch from Direct CMYK/RGB to Use CMYK/RGB profile if you want to use the profiles. And you need a good profile for your CLC as well, one with maximum GCR worked well for us.

It's probably easier to manage the colour in the applications, but it CAN be done on the RIP. Just watch out for a lot of pitfalls. Also, you need to recalibrate often, the CLC's drift a lot. Sometimes a couple of times a day at our place, depending on weather....

Let me know if you want more details. Also, I haven't used it for a couple of years, so all this could obviously have changed since then...

Best Regards

Jorgen

Helps immensely - thanks for sharing.
I'll put it on the RIP for all to access as a Preset within the Adobe apps.
