The possibility to feed the B&W mode with RGB and

drivers always have done with CMYK data.
For non-Postscript drivers any CMYK application data is converted to RGB
*before* it reaches the driver. The driver does not do the conversion.

The question then is whether the driver asks PS etc to send RGB (API
call in Windows for example) when the new printers are used in B&W mode
or just accepts greyscale format as well. How's that in the existing
black only (monochrome) mode of the 9600 etc ? The API calls should tell
how it works. The R800 and R1800 don't have black only anymore, it's all
composite grey on them.
On linearising the wide formats. In the information so far there's an
indication that the wide formats are linearised at the factory and get a
code in the firmware for that. The 2400 has to rely on the production
tolerances. It could be hype and not much different from the custom head
code the wide formats get in the firmware at production and when heads
are exchanged. It could however be a step further. The service manual
will tell and indicate how it is done when heads are exchanged and a new
linearisation has to be done. An advantage for users of the Epson
driver, for RIP users it wouldn't add much.
