Yes. In Windows for example (Mac is very broadly similar) the OS talks
to the printer driver through the Device Driver Interface (DDI) APIs.
The driver reports the capabilities of the printer and what it wants for
the current driver configuration through a set of structures. In turn
the OS provides a printer and screen abstraction layer for the apps
called the Graphics Device Interface (GDI) which provides drawing APIs.
By querying the appropriate GDI APIs the app can find what the selected
driver wants for the selected driver configuration.
So in your terms if it wants mono, or RGB for "B&W" printing. It's a
very simple test to see what the driver is reporting for a particular
driver setup. I don't have the 9600 driver to hand to do it, but
normally a driver asks for greyscale in a mono mode - though of course
whether it then uses a rich black for output is up to it. Remind me
again privately when the 2400 driver becomes publicly available and I'll
do the test for you.

Steve
