Yes it really helps to know that the two packages mentioned which are the choices I came up to (leaning presently towards the X-Rite), can make a profile from a transparency as well. In that case the only additional cost would be the transparency itself. Could both packages handle a HCT as well? Or did you mention Hutcheson but for the IT8 standard?

There are two predominantly popular packages that would fit your photographic workflow needs: the Eye-One Photo from GretagMacbeth and the Pulse ColorElite Standard system with UV and Optix from X-Rite/Monaco. Both solutions are comparably under $1500 and in general performance. And you're right, both packages only include a 5"x7" reflective IT8.

The Scanner software modules included in both are compatible with IT8/ANSI certified reflective and transparent targets. That means you can usually and safely assume that the popular targets (Kodak, Fuji, HutchColor, etc.) will be compatible.
