You're right, offhand I don't see a way to specify a quality or rendering intent parameter in the match statement of Image Events. Image Events is fairly new, that's why it didn't completely replace ColorSyncScripting, and they're both present in Tiger. That likely won't be the case in the next major release of MacOSX. By then I'd think any limitations of Image Events will have been remedied.

That's true, image download from camera can be triggered via Automator, as can taking a picture with some cameras. As to whether or not apps will be scriptable by Automator, Applescript or both, who can say, I don't know that there's any kind of policy about that. It would be nice to have both, but like everything else it's a question of time and work invested. We were really excited about getting Automator support in there because it's new for Tiger, I think Automator actions are going to be more understandable to many users than
