If you are using a CMYK workflow, you can convert your image to a cmyk
tiff with nothing in the CMY channels and your grayscale image in the
black channel. If you are using an RGB workflow, then someone else
might have to suggest something.

A 9% grayscale tiff placed in Quark 6.0 and converted to an Acrobat

file, prints to my Fiery Xerox 3535 not as 9% black but in all 4
colors.
I would print this file as grayscale but the page also has color
elements.
My customers Quark file prints properly to my Fiery (in black only)
but we
want to use pdfs. I could print this file as grayscale but the page has
additional elements that need to print in color.
