The hard but secure way?
CMD-C
CMD-N (CMYK, same Colorspace like the other CMYK pictures, background: white)
CMD-4
CMD-V
Now you have a 4-coloured Grayscale with the same Profile the regular CMYK pictures have.
So there shouldn't be any differences in later transformations.
First, you should check your PDF, if the 9% black is anymore in grayscale.
