My customer is using Vectorworks 10.1 to print to a postscript printer
HP1055cm-plus. He is using OS 10.4 and is viewing on an Apple Cinema
Display and is printing to a 24lb bond paper. I can build profiles for
him using Monaco profiler but Vectorworks doesn't color manage it's
files. I've had some advice to open the exported files in Photoshop and
use the monitor profile there to view what is being seen in
Vectorworks, then manipulate colors and print. Can anyone on the list
advise me as to the strategy to take to dodge having to go to photoshop
and still get some sort of predictable colors?
VectorWorks will print to HPGL2 drivers, or to PostScript printers. Either way there are compromises, and the results are significantly different (not to mention Mac/PC variations as well); so configuring files and deciding on workflow methods need to be done with the printing method taken into consideration. You can create a vector color table with custom colors in it for VectorWorks, though, as I recall, there is a list of unchangable colors at the top. These colors are not run through color management for on-screen accuracy, but it does allow you to reverse engineer colors you like, or corporate colors you need. I tend to create a table of muted, subtle colors, since the standard choices are rather unattactive when used for renderings. As for pixelbased images; I'd suggest color managing them in Photoshop before placing in VectorWorks, then rendering anything of importance back into Photoshop at the end, as already suggested to you, and using the calibrated monitor and a printer profile to see what you'll get in print. No simple shortcuts that I'm aware of, just the usual tricks for non-color managed applications.
