This is a totally untrue statement that indicates either that you're
completely unaware of how Camera Raw interprets color, or you have an
agenda that necessitates spreading disinformation. The Calibrate
controls in Camera Raw adjust the primaries of the built-in matrix
profiles for the camera model being used to account for interunit
variation, the main cause of which is differences in the thickness of
the CFAs, and Tom's script merely automates that process. It
establishes no curves or tables, it simply moves the coordinates of
the primaries in the xy chromaticity plot.
You can rest assured that I have less than complete information on the
inner workings of ACR. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. Don't be a conspiracy
theorist.
If I understand what your saying above, ACR is moving the defined color
space around in Lab to best facilitate the incoming data. The Fors'
script is doing this based on the values of a ColorChecker chart. Am I
right? What do I win? :)
Now, I ask you, if Adobe allowed you to choose a camera profile of
your own making that represented the abilities of your camera would
you use it?
Only if it produced better results than the ones Thomas Knoll has
already built for me. Based on my experience thus far, that would
translate to a resounding "no".
At this point nobody can test that.
It would complicate the process by forcing me to make a decision
instead of relying on automatic behavior.
If you're moving into the camera's own color-space, the behavior should
be automatic. Shouldn't it?
And what sort of impact do you suppose it would have on the quality
of your work?
Every time I've tried it so far, the impact has been negative.
That is a fair statement.
