Well speaking just for myself, I want to know more because I know that
profile editing is something that is done and many respected members of this
list have mentioned here or elsewhere editing profiles in one context or
another. I don't want to take a serious course in colour management
engineering, this isn't a career for me. But I can make a bit of money on
the side by making profiles for others using decent tools and I like to
deliver a knowledgeable service to people who pay me to build them a
profile. I would like to get some idea of what's involved in editing and
what the tradeoffs are. Hopefully my desire for learning shouldn't be seen
as a threat by more knowledgeable people than myself.
I suspect that GM have provided a simplified editing tool because like most
things in photography, formerly esoteric equipment and proceedures are
moving mass market. Everybody shift three chairs to the right. It happened
with Typography and graphic design in the desktop publishing boom, it
happened with NLE video editing and I think the DSLR camera boom is going to
drive changes in colour management too. I agree, there will be some who will
make a mess of it but that didn't stop DTP tools from moving into microsoft
office and didn't stop iMovie from being popular.
While I agree in principle with the comment that if a profile isn't working
(ie as perfect as can be) its better to redo it than to tinker with it but I
suspect from what I've read that the world isn't this simple.
