Once upon a time, 15 years ago, well before ICC profiles existed; there were drum scanner operators who asked what sized bear the press was. Those scanner operators would mix the porridge just right.
Very few controls in profile editing differ much from the tools in drum scanning. If you want to know more about gradation, local contrast, color-in-color, etc, then perhaps the Hemel Hempstead Crosfield remnents might be able to give you the specific info/training you need. The operator training manuals went into each of the controls.
There are some other Crosfield specialists on the list as well. Perhaps Jim Rich or one of the others might be able to point toward a guide to take you through first setting the end points, then neutralizing the cast and then finally adjusting specific color controls.

Sample edits, the reasoning behind them, and the order in which they were executed paired with screenshots from various profile editors would be incredibly useful in structuring our thinking about profile edits.
Anyone want to take on the task? ;-)
