I deem it of great value, personally, if only to peg down the exact
numbers
on the proof. But if those numbers don't correlate well visually
with the
source then, I agree it's a waste. What has your experience been in
this
regard Thomas?
I largely depends on what the source/reference is and which proof
printer you discuss. If we take the Epson Ultrachrome (4000/76/96)
range I find a pretty good (not meant in a casual sense) harmony
between good numbers and visual match. In some cases slightly worse
numbers are inperceptible, sometimes they scream you in the face.
Depends on the color doesn't it? A neutral which is dE 1 off can be
unacceptable where if it's pure Yellow dE og 8 can look acceptable.
Please bear in mind though that you need a REALLY good reference to
be able to make the distinction (*). Often I find that even very
carefully produced "reference prints" form press are numerically much
further off than a proof. So to even be able to make a visual
comparison great care must be taken to build a valid reference print.
It has taken me more than a few press runs to figure this out.
Also visual correlation will greatly depend on the substrate you
print on. Some will give great numbers but will look horrific (ok,
slightly of then) due to brighteners in the proofing substrate. Or
the "no brightener proof paper" will appear reddish when compared
with the offset sample which DOES have brighteners in it. There are
few absolute answers in real life in my experience.

Faulty "reference prints" are the number one reason why I edit
profiles. If interested you can see a bit more about this at
