Using "profile iteration" has great value for certain types of inkjet
printers.
It was very difficult to make good profiles for Epson 76/9600 because
the RGB input curves (to the print engine) had very ragged transitions
between the light and dark inks and for the transition from RGB to
gray/black. This was eventually shown by Bill Atkinson, when he made
the best profiles known to me for the 76/9600 (download from the Epson
website). A 0-100% Black gradient shows no color banding, while my
excellent GM PM4.1.5 profiles showed 3-5 bands, if memory serves
correct. Atkinson used a 4000+ patch target, iterated 10-20 times, if
memory serves correct. He wrote his own software to read the patches
and perform the iteration while using the GM PM4.1 engine create the
final profile. The consistent use of the GM PM 4.1 profilemaking engine
in both profiles, mine and his, is itself "conclusive proof" that his
exhaustive iterative process solved the 76/9600 problems.
His results were so profound, that I have heard that all other
professional level Epson inkjet have had their base RGB curves smoothed
out using a software linerization step.
I don't know the full extent of the application of linerization across
the Epson line or its use in the HP line, but the potential to improve
the profiling process is considerable.
However, there are still profound compression and CIELab-based color
errors that are introduced into profiles by the current ICC process.
I'm thankful for this heads up on the GMG Colorproof or ORIS Colortuner
software. I will definitely use the 30-day trial version of ORIS
<http://www.colourbyte.co.uk/colourbyte_home.htm>. I don't see the same
sort of trail for GMG Colorproof.
