See, me, I disregard the RIP's suggesed TIL in this case. I feel the whole
liinearization battle with the RIP is fought in that one screen. I tried
pushing it once all the way to 350%, on some paper, but every incremental %
of inks only resulted in marginal decrease in L*. I also tried boosting the
% of light inks in solid, up to 50%, but that doesn't much to lower L* of
400% ink. I also tried selecting a Reference ICC profile like TR-001 but all
that seems to do is to display an ab diagram of the linearized printer
primaries against the Reference primary.

Imagine, an L* of 22! This is so weak, it's like diluted chicken soup --
yeark. (I have nothing against chicken)

I'm using Photo black too, here.

That can't be, Simon! I know we go down, after much pain and time/material
wasted, to an L* of 13 on Fuji Fpsatin semi-matte stock but that's still NOT
dark enough. At some point, I want to risk buying a test roll of 24" EFI
9180 semi-matt stock and see what results I get with that.
But L* of 22 is never dark enough.
I keep my fingers crossed that the BEST/EFI tandem have some tricks up their
sleeves for an impending update...
