Roger and Jim,
Thanks for your responses, sorry to be a couple of days replying.
I don't have the original 400% chart for the paper in question. I found
the point at which it appeared to first pool, selected that percentage
and printed again at about 200% (then tossed the original 400% strip -
oops). The RIP then picked a TIL of 166% from the patches measured.
At the end of the 5th step the the darkest patch measures L* of 22
This is on a 280gsm fine art smooth matt stock and using the PhotoBlack
on the 9600 (as the client prints on many media types and doesn't want
to change Black ink for different substrates).
I am just curious if this is about as black as I can get using this
setup.
Thanks
Simon

it just trial and error?

What L* value are you getting for your calibrated Total Ink Limit? I
calibrated today at 215% and yet the red, green and blue patches were
wet. I
let them dry but cut the ink channel down at Step 3 (or is it Step 2?)
to
prevent overinking. Anyway, since BEST changed their linearization
routine
between 4.6+ and v5, and up, I find we cannot lay as much ink as we
used to
do through the old linearization procedure. That's my exerience. Are
you
finding your 400% ink in Step 1 gives you an L* value above 12, 14,
16? Have
a look at your characterization target and locate the 400% ink patch.
