Hi to all,
I have a couple of inquiries for the list; one regarding the GMB
Eye-One system and whether or not I should upgrade it or go to a
completely different system, and two, how best to calibrate/profile my
system to print B&W with the greatest D-Max and tonal range. I have
used Piezography in the past but with the new advances in ink (i.e.
UltraChrome K3), and issues I personally had with Piezography, I would
currently like to use my Epson R2400 to get the best possible B&W
prints. I believe Piezography is a great system if one has a dedicated
printer to use with it but I do not at this point.
My current system:
PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5 Ghz
Photoshop CS2
GMB Eye-One Photo
Epson 4990 Scanner
Sony Artisan GDM-520K Monitor
Epson Photo R2400 Printer
I am not a color expert by any means but I do understand the premise of
color management and do profile my devices regularly. I am using the
Eye-One Photo system and am considering whether to upgrade to the
Eye-One scanner profiling module; right now I use the Epson 4990
internal/self calibration (I know this is not accurate profiling). With
some of the latest posts from the list I am concerned that the Eye-One
is not to professional standards and would like some feedback on what
direction I should take; should I stay with Eye-One with a minimum
upgrade or change completely?
My monitor is a Sony Artisan GDM-520K and I currently use the Epson
Photo R2400 with the UltraChrome K3 inksets. My main inquiries are as
follows:
1. Can I somehow profile my printer to print B&W? Do I need additional
software?
2. Are there particular settings the list would recommend in printing
B&W with the 2400?
3. In converting color to B&W I use Channel Mixer within Photoshop CS2;
has a better conversion method emerged?
4. What about toning B&W? Wouldn?t using only the 3 black inks be most
stable?
I simply want to get the best B&W images with my current configuration
but am willing to upgrade depending on what the list recommends. I
look forward to any reply?
Much appreciation,
Cody Thomas
