Thank you for the time you have taken to
explain this in detail.

This is precisely my question. How do I configure Nikon Capture Editor to
accept my custom camera profile as the colour space, and, if I must define
colour before the raw conversion how on earth could I ever produce an
untagged file in order to create the custom profile in the first place?
Paradox!

Well, that, in a nutshell answers
my question. You see, before I realised that these "modes"
where conversions to a workspace and not assigned input profiles, I thought
i could simply remove the Nikon "mode" after the fact and then
use the file to create a custom profile. Now I realise I was profiling sRGB
data and not original camera data, (which explains a few anomalies).

Before Camera Raw I used the raw converter program, in my case it
was Canon, to convert CRW to TIF.
The TIF file opened in Photoshop as untagged. This is why I believed it
possible to convert from Raw to TIF without assigning or converting to a colour
space. I assumed that the file data was simply the digitised camera control
signals and, that I was in direct contact with the camera CCDS unambiguous
response to light, which I subsequently profiled.
Now I am
understanding that even a raw converter that allowed me to use third party
profiles forces me to define the colour space before the raw conversion.
Has something changed and if so in which direction? Was I mistaken in believing that I used
to be able to convert from RAW to TIF without defining colour, or has the market
moved towards preferring to integrate a commitment to colour space into the RAW
conversion process.
