Well... I don't know Canon's software well, so I won't comment on
what was happening during your previous conversions. If your heart
is set on profiling your cameras, it is possible to do so using
ColorEyes software (http://www.integrated-color.com/cecamera/
overview.html) and a RAW converter like C1 Pro (http://
www.phaseone.com/Content/Software/PROSoftware.aspx). ColorEyes does
not work well (or at all) with Adobe Camera RAW or Nikon Capture.
Many of us shooting RAW have moved to ACR and are very pleased with
the results we get without custom camera profiles, particularly if we
use Thomas For's script (http://fors.net/chromoholics/download/) to
provide calibration data for each camera. I'd suggest that you give
it a try before going the profiling route. Thomas even has a couple
of Quicktime movies on his site to show you how the process works.
The script is basically doing an iterative simplex fit using the
output of ARC from a RAW shot of a ColorChecker card and the
reference data for the card to find the corrections needed for that
camera. These can be saved in the Calibrate tab of ACR. If you're
obsessive, you can even measure the card yourself with an i1 or other
spectro and edit the reference data in the script with your own
measured ref data rather than using the averaged ref data that's
built-in. That's probably overkill, but the option is available and
it's not hard to do.
