if a Nikon user shoots RAW, and then simply takes the card out and
looks at the images with a program like DataRescue, it sees the
unprocessed images on the card. The program 'renders' a preview.
The previews are visual RGB images and are somewhat different than
those shown when downloaded by View, Capture, Bridge, etc.
What assumptions might be made here?
ie., does the camera process the NEF internally using the user chosen
options (Type II or AdobeRGB in my case) and subsequently down-
sample and embed a processed Thumbnail into the NEF? If not, where
does this thumbnail come from and how is the image tagged or color
managed.
As you say, a RAW file is still a grayscale file. So where does a
program like DataRescue derive its 'rendering' to show a file it is
recovering? Does it convert with some chosen basic profile simply to
'see something'?
