OK. So now they've got it linear. What about color? Is the LJ rip
just made to crunch ColorMatch by default and spit out prints? They say
they re-calibrate for every emulsion, but is what they're really doing re-
linearization?
Calibration in this context is linearization. A printer profile that
describes the gamut and contrast in a three dimensional model has yet to be
made. To do that, a profile target of over 1,000 color patches has to be
printed right after a linearization. Then the patches are read by a
spectrophotometer into a program that makes profiles like Monaco.
Then you would convert your file from your working color space (sRGB,
AdobeRGB, Colormatch, etc.) to that resulting profile before sending it to
the Lightjet. This will be much better than simply using Colormatch RGB
because it's tailor made to represent the characteristics of that output no
matter how closed-loop it is. If they don't have the software and equipment
to make the profile (and it appears that they don't or else they would've
done it already), then there are outside services that make profiles
beginning at about $100. They'll send you the target files. You get them
printed after a calibration and return the output to them to read. They send
back the profile for you to use. Check out Profile City on the web. When it
works, you can sell it to the Lightjet owners for a profit.
