The only reason I find that somewhat suspicious is I've successfully
profiled a few Lightjets for some labs. I guess it's possible they have
their system setup as "closed loop" but that's certainly not the only
option.
There's no reason you can't profile right on top of someone's closed
loop calibration. I've done it at with my lab here in L.A. and it works
fine. The owner of this particular Lightjet thinks ICC profiles are,
well, quaint. He prints a 4000+ patch target which he then scans back
into his ICG scanner and makes a lookup table so his scanner creates
"LightjetRGB". Not very flexible, but that's how he likes to work. The
biggest problem I run into with Lightjets is process control, both on
the printer itself, and more importantly in the RA-4 line. It's a
serious problem, and I've eliminated quite a few possible vendors,
including very high profile ones here in L.A., because of that.
