As you have found, dot shape specifics does not generate a lot of of
interests in the industry even though it impacts color tremendously. We're
talking freely interchanging color in ICC profiles here, never mind the
"standard" profiles like USWebCoatedSWOPv2, does anyone ever stop to think
of just what processing conditions those profiles represent? What plate
curves have been used on them? What screening have been used? I find these
are perfect examples of gray areas that are never discussed but they pervade
a number of fundamental assumptions that people make when they freely
interchange profiles. Break anyone of those and look where fingers point at.
At one point, I was a big proponent of the presence of "Process Parameters"
inside ICC profiles. And I still am, more than ever, the more I discover
about the myriad of ways colors can be formed on a press and elsewhere. If
color matches, yes, let's not get bogged down this path but if there are the
least bit of disagreements, by all means, let's discuss what happens
upstreams in prepress or on the press, like screening particulars. It's only
one source of variation but at least it's not something too abstract to
tackle like viewing environment.
And Marco, it's not like there are thousands of messages a day flowing from
this list, everyday.
