Hey Ken -
While I remember the FITS very well, I was perhaps over-simplifying when
making the proxy comment. Aperture is
offering near-instantaneous functionality through what appears to be
resolution independant tricks.
Not really proxy-like, but rather FITS-like for those who know the
difference.

I appreciate the analogy you are trying to make, but Live Picture did
not use proxies! The FITS file format is a multi-resolution tiered
format and Live Picture would select the portion of the image to show
on screen from a tier that was already close in resolution to what was
needed and quickly scale the rest of the way. With proxies you would
never have been able to zoom in very tight and see all of the detail of
the image.
