That assumes that all models of a particular camera have essentially
identical output. Valid assumption? Maybe, maybe not. If so, there
would be no need for Thomas Fors' characterization script for ACR.
Will there be a way to "tune" Aperture for a particular camera, as
ACR does with the Calibration tab?"
Not in Version 1

Sorry, Jon, I lost you. What's not a critical concern? I'm not sure
what you're referring to. I assume that the RAW files are not
modified at all. Therefore, the editing info must be stored
somewhere... in the as-yet undescribed "master image" file?"
Apple was not concerned with exporting the XML data with the RAW image for
offline storage. It does get tied to the
on-line image (which is not modified at all). Until the RAW file is
exported, the XML edit list is simply a set of
instructions which resides in a SQL database. In other words, there is no
proprietary "master image file", but simply
the original RAW and the XML edit list.
"For those of us who use a DAM like Portfolio Server, keeping the
editing data with the raw data file is a big concern. Dissociating
the raw data and the editing info is an invitation to disaster."
I would assume that Aperture will in the next Version 2 iteration become a
full replacement for Portfolio Server and
other similar products. It stands on its own for those growing into DAM in
2005-2006, but is not yet a direct
replacement for some of the existing DAM solutions.
