Andrew, Rich,

Looked
liked? The measured colors? OK, so we have a scene with a 10,000:1 contrast
ratio. Now what? We need to compress it to fit some output device (our
display). Is it now accurate? Do we like the color? Is accurate color always
preferable color? I would suggest, not always (some might say rarely).

Accurate, in this context, means to me a good appearance match to the
original scene. Yes, you can create a reasonable appearance match of a high
dynamic range large gamut scene on an output device with far more severe
capability. In fact, its essential. In my experience, reasonably accurate
appearance matches (not colorimetric matches) are generally
preferred.
