How large is a web image profile?

I noticed a strange thing with the "Save for the web" feature of Photoshop - Image Ready. Normally, checking the box "Profile" adds a few Kbytes to the image size, but for some images it can multiply the image size by ten (ex. 40 - 400Kb). I don't understand what the problem is and why such behavior occurs. Any idea?
