Marco, please don't misunderstand. I agree 100% with you.
The original question/comment (I don't remember from whom) was about
inaccuracies in the gray ramp of the NEC LED display - particularly in the
shadow areas. It's my understanding that the display is sold with the
EyeOne Pro and re-badged basICColor in Europe. Therefore, if the EyeOne Pro
displays significant drift in the shadow areas, then this could explain the
problem that the other individual was having. This is also why I mentioned
the averaging function in the US NEC software. There was no intent to
discredit a particular device, just to provide info that may help explain a
problem that was observed by someone else.
If would be nice if someone who does have "the numbers and the specifics"
might be willing to speak up on how any of the commonly used, reasonably
priced spectros stack up in the area of monitor calibration and how do they
compare to commonly used and reasonably priced colorimeters.
To use your analogy, even Toyotas have more and more complicated ignition
systems that need more and more complicated diagnostic computers.
With monitor gamuts growing wider and on-board monitor LUTs of 10-bits,
etc., it seems that we may be at or near a time when the instruments we use
may not be as precise or repeatable as the devices they are measuring. Are
we already there with these newest displays? Are some devices better than
others for certain types of displays? How do we know? As you say, where
are "the numbers and the specifics?"
Michael
