Microsoft has a poor record of "playing well with others": so far their
behavior pattern has been more like that of a raider, seizing all the goods
and vanquishing the opponents. Let's not forget the recent antitrust action
against them, which they squeaked out of with a little help from their
friends.
The whole idea of color management up to now has been to have full
compatibility amongst vendors and products. Some vendors add slightly
proprietary touches to their offerings (GMG, for example), but overall
competition based on common ground rules keeps the whole machine humming.
I fear that Microsoft is bringing its "big stick" approach to color
management too, will distort the market with tactics that in other times
would have triggered trust-busting government action, and eliminate the
competition.
I say: if Microsoft wants to be a team member, they are welcome.
If they intend to be the bully on the block, we should oppose that.
