The apperance mismatch has nothing to do with whathever gamma setting on
your monitor. This says to me you don't have the proper Cromalin ICC profile
to view your High Definition scans. That's not a function of your monitor
calibration and profiling. Actually, if you change from 2.2 to 1.8 and you
use a proper Cromalin profile to view your High Definition scans, you should
not see any difference.

Too bright? Please explain what you mean by "too bright". I'm not following.

I have the same monitor here calibrated and profiled with the same hardware
and software and I'm getting exact color matches to Cromalin proofs
*because* I have created Cromalin ICC profile.

That is irrelevant. As long as you know what their Source is you don't need
to have embedded profiles to accurately view their proofs. Just assign your
Cromalin profile when you open the images in Photoshop and you're done.
