Re: Goodbye ICC.. Microsoft... Gutenprint
Jan-Peter Homann made a lot of interesting pointe re-Apple and M$oft in particular towards printing with colour management and GutenPrint/ Open Source technologies. If Apple could be more supportive of these and handle printing while properly using ICC Profiles, they may have a big advantage. At present the use of many inkjets without a RIP is a mess. Most of the drivers are very amateurish at best. No settings for Ink Limits, restrictions, etc. Yes you can spend many hundreds, thousands, on a RIP, but these are usually on the PC platform, requiring you to purchase (and worse, use!) one of those beige boxes! If only Apple would incorporate some higher level printing technology, for those who want it, rather than to tell everyone that "ColorSync will fix everything". The rest of Mac OS has moved on since 1993 (thankfully!), ColorSync needs to as well.
