The best way to make a monitor profile is to use an external calibrator (like Gretag MacBeth's Eye One Display). This is a hardware device that will measure the colors of your monitor and create a profile accordingly. This is a more accurate way to create a profile than using the calibrate in the displaypreferences. In my humble opinion calibrating with a hardware calibration tool is the only right way to calibrate a monitor.

Yours,
Job
