I think the answer is yes, spammers are now using the technique of signing up to many mailing lists, not to spam to them, but simply to harvest email addresses. At least one of my accounts, recently created and used for nothing but mailing list subscriptions, recieved spam very quickly after signing onto mailing lists.

Sorting out which mailing list accounts are the spammers,
could be a bit tricky. They are not likely to post anything,
or do anything else to give themselves away.

The only response I can think of, would be for the mailing list
software to shroud the posters email addresses, so that they
are harder for the automatic harvesters to recognise.

Graeme Gill.
