Hi Rick,
No specific experience with a 9800 here, but you
shouldn't have a problem getting a decent match colorimetrically speaking. The
9800, having different inks and print engine, will require its own gamut file,
.mx3 and .mx4(5) profiles, but if you use the same target values in your
mx4(5) that you use for you 9600, the difference should be miniscule after
profile iteration. Maybe you'll get a closer match to your target
data off the 9800 even.
We currently have a number of remote printers
(Epson 4000s) as well as a few 4000s and a 7600/9600 on site. Some use
different paper that required different profiles, but all of them match very
closely.
As far as issues you'll run into. Two words: nozzle
clogs. I can't speak for the 9800, but the 4000's a quite prone to cloggin',
particularly just before or during a major proofing cycle. Train the end user to
look for the signs (banded proofs, missing colors, ect)...perhaps they could
have a means to verify the proof onsite. There's verification software
available, but you could set something up with Gretag MeasureTool as well if
they have some instrumentation. Barring that though, its useful to have the
printer calibration updated regularly...in this case perhaps via snail mail on a
regular basis. This in itself is a proof verification step, though it won't
prevent nozzle clogging.
Can't speak on sharpness either I'm afraid, but I'd
be interested in learning what you find out in that regard.
Cheers.
