Hi Rick,
Here are the major differences that I have found with the new K3
machines compared to the older 4000/7600/9600.
1. Magenta is very red. around 20 delta E from the old magenta.
Hitting some reds will still be difficult. Gamut is not really
bigger, just different.
2. The Light Light Black is really not necessary. It certainly is not
the reason for darker blacks. Using all 3 blacks can also lead to
over inking issues found later in the profiling stage. If you have
the ability to turn off the LLK, I highly recommend it. The blacks
are also more neutral than the old.
3. Good news for iterative calibration. K3 inks are pretty much
stable after 5 min. for all colors, compared to the older ones at
15-20min. and longer for some of the colors.
4. Colorimetrically you should be able to match the 9600 profiled to
SWOP or GRACoL. You will see a difference in Lab spot colors that
bypass your reference profile as the Gamuts of these printers are
different.
Hope some of this helps.
Thanks,
Troy

Calling all color gurus!!
This is slightly off topic, but we are about to install our first
remote proofing station at one of our more prominent clients. (We
have 3 more waiting in the wings.) We are using GMG as well as
Epson 9600's here. The client is going to be getting a 9800 as
9600's are hard to come by. Have any of you done this and if so
what problems can I expect to arise? They are going to be using our
GMG server through a dedicated T1. Will there be issues in matching
a 9800 to our existing 9600's? And can anyone speak from experience
as to the difference in sharpness between a 9800 and a 9600? I know
there is a way to increase sharpness on the 9600 through GMG but I
hear that is not an option on the new 9800. Thanks in advance for
your time! And I checked my building.... no Osama here!!!!
