Steve
If you are happy with your current proofing (absolute version) in all
aspects other than the problem you described, and you are reluctant to
change it, you could consider running a "content only" proof
Select a cheap paper, use 360 dpi, profile using relative intent, so it has
some colour relevance and will pick up the "trash" background.
Supply it back to your clients or use it internally as a content proof
before you run the final proofs
This would be relatively cheap and quick especially on the HP, although it
does add another process in your workflow
Alternately you could hook up your EFI Colorproof Rip to an appropriate
Canon or Xerox, properly colour managed they can produce excellent results.
Test some problem images and to see if the 1-3% background dots show up
sufficiently enough to be confident of the results.
In either of these suggestions you could manipulate the highlight gradation
in the Colorproof Rip to exaggerate the problem.
Hope this helps
