I hope I'm not saying something stupid here, but it's my impression from my
own CM experience that linearization is one thing (which may produce
grey-balanced results fortuitously, but not by design), whereas the ultimate
and proper grey-balancing of the output is the job of the profile, which is
certainly made easier, smoother and more effective by proper linearization
procedures.

No, that is certainly not my take on it. A good profile for an inkjet is
improved tremendously by both proper linearization and careful ink limiting.
Specially ink limiting, lacking which you are battling a monster that you
can't even hope to subdue.

As I said, very important, indeed crucial. You are asking the profile to do
an impossible job if you do not limit the inks, and the results will vary
between bad and utterly useless.

Yes, I do think you're off the mark there. Get the linearization and the ink
limiting done right, and let the profile achieve neutrality. That's one the
of the core tasks it's meant to accomplish.
